Star Trek: The Next Generation (abbreviated as TNG) was a television series in the Star Trek franchise that ran from 1987 to 1994. It's release followed Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and was intended to be the "next generation" of Star Trek, being the first live-action Star Trek show since Star Trek: The Original Series. It featured a brand new cast of characters, and takes place roughly one century since the voyages of the original Starship Enterprise, on a new ovular-shaped Enterprise, christened NCC-1701-D. It was the last TV series Gene Roddenberry worked on before he passed away in 1991, during the production of TNG's 5th season. After his death, Rick Berman took over as the lead producer for the franchise, up until the great Paramount/CBS split in 2005 that almost ended the franchise.
